*John Foster (1648-1681), "Portrait of Richard Mather" ca. 1670.  This woodcut is thought to be the first produced in America.  Its strong silhouette and patterns of light and dark well suit the austerity of this early Puritan minister with his eyeglasses and Bible in hand. [Princeton University Library]

Franz Kline (1910-1962), "Mahoning" 1956.  Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Kline became a leader in the abstract expressionist movement.
