Inscription: Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) was an itinerant artist who worked mostly in the border areas of New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Girl in Red Dress with Cat & Dog, ca. 1830-35, is typical of his simplified approach to portrait painting and his sensitive treatment of faces.
