*John Foster (1648-1681), "Portrait of Richard Mther" ca. 1670.  This woodcut is thought to be the first produced in America.  Its strong silhouette and patterns of light and dark well suit the austerity of this early Puritan minister eith his eyeglasses and Bible in hand.

Franz Kline (1910-962), "Mahoning" 1956.  Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Kline becoame a leader in the abstract expressionist movement.
